I am excited, honestly I am, but I’d be even more jazzed if the work of famed automotive futurist Daniel Simon didn’t look quite so much like Apple designed an electric dog chew.

Like I replied on the FP earlier:

I hope this flops if it ever actually happens. Doesn’t it make sense that whoever writes the best code is going to win every single race without fail (barring a mechanical failure)? At least in F1 one of the Mercedes guys could have a bad start or something and make it entertaining. Pass.

I know, but if you really think about it it can’t possibly be very entertaining after the first few races of every season. I want to love it. I just can’t.

I don’t think there’s any way to accurately speculate what the racing is going to be like. I mean, we don’t even know what tracks they’ll be competing on. I remain optimistic. Putting it down now is jumping the gun.

It seems to have potential to be quite entertaining to me, but more of Battlebots/DARPA entertainment and less WEC/F1 entertainment.

Fair enough. At least in Battlebots though they are remote controlled. These will be autonomous so, at least in theory, flawless in terms of judgement and race craft. I hope you are right though.

That’s very true, but do we know what degree of autonomous they will be? (serious question because it’s a spectrum from RC to point and click.)

I’m reminded of Gran Turismo 3's B-spec racing mode. In it you basically played crew chief and watched your car/driver race around the track (I barely played it b/c it was boring vs racing yourself.) BUT during the course of any given lap, you still could control things like how aggressive, or how economically the driver behaved. Risking crashing for getting that pass made at the hairpin, stuff like that. You scheduled pit stops, and tire strategy too (maybe? Don’t remember fully)

From a spectator perspective it was still watching a race, and the teams (players) still had a little control regarding how the cars behaved. So there was still the excitement of a real race.

Who knows!! haha! It has equal potential to be a total shitshow, but more auto racing is a good thing in my book, no matter what kind.
